What to Do When You Don't Know What Comes Next

There are seasons in life when the path ahead seems clear. We know where we're going, what we're working toward, and what the next step should be.

Then there are seasons when everything feels uncertain.

A door closes. A relationship changes. Retirement approaches. A diagnosis arrives. A loved one needs care. A dream takes longer than expected. The future suddenly feels foggy, and we're left asking, “Lord, what now?”

If you're in a season where you don't know what comes next, take heart. You are not the first person to stand in that uncomfortable place between what was and what will be. Throughout Scripture, God often did some of His deepest work in people during seasons of uncertainty.

You Don't Need the Entire Map

One of the hardest things about uncertainty is that we want answers.

We want a plan.

We want a timeline.

We want God to show us exactly how everything will work out.

Yet God often provides something different. Instead of giving us the entire map, He gives us enough light for the next step.

Psalm 119:105 says:

"Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path."

Notice that Scripture doesn't describe a floodlight that illuminates miles ahead. It describes a lamp. Just enough light to take the next step safely.

When we don't know what comes next, our job is not to figure out the entire future. Our job is to trust God with the step directly in front of us.

Remember What You Already Know

When uncertainty grows, fear often follows close behind.

Our minds begin asking questions:

• What if things don't work out?

• What if I make the wrong decision?

• What if I never find an answer?

• What if this season never changes?

During those moments, it helps to stop focusing on what we don't know and remember what we do know.

• We know that God is faithful.

• We know that He is good.

• We know that He sees what we cannot see.

• We know that He has carried us through difficult seasons before.

• We know that He promises never to leave us.

• The details of tomorrow may be unclear, but the character of God never changes.

• When life feels uncertain, anchor yourself to what is certain.

  
  

Stop Trying to Force an Answer

Many of us become uncomfortable with waiting.

We would rather make a quick decision than sit in uncertainty.

But sometimes forcing an answer creates more problems than waiting for God's direction.

Abraham had to wait.

Joseph had to wait.

David had to wait.

Ruth had to wait.

Even the disciples experienced seasons when they didn't fully understand what God was doing.

Waiting is not wasted time when God is involved.

Sometimes God uses waiting to prepare circumstances.

Sometimes He uses waiting to prepare other people.

And sometimes He uses waiting to prepare us.

The season you're in may not be a delay. It may be preparation.

Focus on Today's Assignment

When the future feels overwhelming, it's easy to become consumed by questions about tomorrow.

Yet Jesus gave us a different perspective.

In Matthew 6:34, He said:

"Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own."

That doesn't mean we never plan.

It means we don't live consumed by uncertainty.

Instead of asking, "How will everything work out?" try asking:

"Lord, what would You have me do today?"

Maybe today's assignment is prayer.

Maybe it's rest.

Maybe it's caring for someone you love.

Maybe it's learning a new skill.

Maybe it's simply remaining faithful in the responsibilities already in front of you.

Small acts of obedience often become the stepping stones God uses to lead us into the future.

Give Yourself Permission Not to Have All the Answers

There is a great deal of pressure in our culture to always know what's next.

People ask questions like:

"What are your plans?"

"What's your next goal?"

"Where do you see yourself in five years?"

Sometimes we genuinely don't know.

And that's okay.

Not knowing doesn't mean you're failing.

Not knowing doesn't mean God has forgotten you.

Not knowing doesn't mean you're behind.

In fact, some of God's greatest guidance comes while we are walking, trusting, and seeking Him one day at a time.

You do not need to have every answer before you move forward.

You only need enough faith for today.

Look Back Before Looking Forward

One of the most encouraging exercises during uncertain seasons is to look back.

• Think about the challenges God has already carried you through.

• Think about prayers He has answered.

• Think about doors He has opened.

• Think about the times when you worried, only to discover later that He was already working behind the scenes.

• Your history with God becomes evidence for your future.

• The same God who was faithful then remains faithful now.

• The same God who guided you before is still guiding you today.

• The same God who carried you through previous storms will carry you through this one as well.

  
  

Stay Close to God in the Waiting

When we don't know what comes next, our greatest temptation is often to focus entirely on finding answers.

But God's first invitation is always relationship.

Before direction comes intimacy.

Before clarity comes trust.

Before answers come surrender.

Spend time in prayer.

Open your Bible.

Talk honestly with God about your fears.

Bring Him your questions.

Bring Him your disappointments.

Bring Him your hopes.

The goal is not simply to discover what comes next. The goal is to stay close to the One who already knows.

A Gentle Reminder for Today

If you're standing in a place of uncertainty right now, take a deep breath.

You do not have to figure out your entire future today.

You do not have to carry tomorrow's burdens.

You do not have to force a door open.

You do not have to know every detail.

God sees the road ahead even when you cannot.

He is already present in the days you have not yet lived.

He is already working in ways you cannot yet see.

And while you may not know what comes next, you can trust the One who does.

Take the next step.

Trust Him with the rest.

A Simple Prayer

Father, when I don't know what comes next, help me trust You. Quiet the fear that comes with uncertainty and remind me that You are already in my future. Give me wisdom for today's decisions, peace for today's worries, and faith for today's journey. Help me follow You one step at a time, knowing that Your plans are good even when I cannot see them clearly. In Jesus Amen.
